Winter in the Berkshires |
As of this writing, Stockbridge has just received nearly two feet of snow. Winter is a wonderful time to visit the Berkshires, especially if you enjoy cross-country or downhill skiing. Accommodations are plentiful and often less expensive than during the summer Tanglewood season and restaurant reservations are often not necessary. The gallery is open 7 days a week from 11:00-5:00 and we look forward to seeing many of you this winter.

Quote of the Month |
"All his work is related to one central vision, one coherent, articulate, intelligent and riotously colorful outpouring of sculptural feeling. He has created a brilliant personal universal system … His vocabulary has been fairly consistent … but the permutations of that vocabulary become vast and forever fresh"

Artist of the Month: |
2003 has been a banner year for Marvin Liposky. His retrospective exhibition at the Oakland Musuem of California, "An Odyssey of Glass," has cemented his position as one of a handful of contemporary glass artists who can truly be called the fathers of the studio glass movement. He has a cover article in the current issue of "American Craft" magazine and will have another feature article in an upcoming issue of "Sculpture" magazine. Marvin is truly one of the pioneers of the studio glass movement. He was in the very first class of Professor Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin, nearly 40 years ago. He is responsible for founding glass programs at the California College of Arts and Crafts and at the University of California, Berkeley. Many well known glass artists today were once his students. Marvin is well known for his travels abroad, where he has created series of work in studios and factories in many countries, including Czech Republic, Italy, Japan, China and Germany. His formula of blowing his sculptural pieces abroad or in other studios in the U.S. and then finishing them in his Berkeley studio makes him unique among glass artists (although other artists such as Dale Chihuly and Lino Tagliapietra occasionally do the same thing). For a more detailed discussion of the creation of Lipofsky's work, please refer to the introductory article to Marvin's retrospective exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, written by Dan Klein.
